What Will Your Headstone Say?

How Important is a Work-Life Balance to You?

It’s a morbid question, but I think it is safe to say that no-one would write on their headstone:

“I wish I had worked harder,” or “If only I had put in more hours at work.”

I have spent some time thinking about my priorities. Spending time with my family is definitely top of the list. Unfortunately creating that work-life balance is proving extremely difficult as a teacher.

When I spoke with my Head Teacher at school about how I was feeling – overwhelmed with the workload – he told me he understood, but teachers don’t have a set number of working hours. We are expected to work until the job is done, which in teaching is never. There is never a time when a teacher can honestly say, "There. Everything is done. There is no more work to do."

Watching my husband and daughter go off out to enjoy the summer weather, whist I remained at home working, really struck a chord. I didn't want to be an absent mother. I wanted to be part of my daughter's life, like I used to be when she was a baby.

Thoughts like, “I should be working,” during my daughter’s birthday party made me take stock.

Then I started thinking....other than being a teacher, a wife and a mother, who am I? There was nothing else. I didn't have time for hobbies or interests. I work, look after my family, eat and sleep. That's it.

I began asking myself, “What do I want from my life? How do I want to spend my time? And when am I happiest?”

The conclusion?

I want to play with my daughter. I want to go out on family days out without worrying about the work waiting for me at home. I want to be able to afford family trips and holidays without worrying about how I will pay the bills next month.

I don’t think I am asking for much.

I want a work-life balance.

I want my headstone to read:  “A life well lived.”
